The Art Behind Filtrare Coffee
Every Filtrare coffee maker begins as a simple idea — to create something beautiful, functional, and lasting. Each piece passes through careful hands and deliberate steps, slowly transformed from raw clay to a timeless pour over worthy of your morning ritual. Here’s how your Filtrare comes to life.
It All Starts with Clay
Casting the Form
Every Filtrare piece begins with a custom-designed mold, created to capture the perfect balance of proportion, pour, and heat retention.
We mix and pour liquid clay, known as slip, into these molds. Over time, the clay naturally begins to set, forming the familiar silhouette of our coffee maker.
This step demands patience and precision: the thickness of the walls, the smooth curve of the spout, even the angle of the handle, all determined by timing and the maker’s eye.
Patience in Every Detail
Drying and Refining
Once released from its mold, each piece is still delicate, a soft, chalky form that requires a steady hand.
We let it dry slowly, refining edges and smoothing seams with care. The spout is shaped to pour cleanly, and every surface is checked by touch, not just sight.
This quiet, unhurried stage ensures the final piece feels as good in the hand as it looks on the counter.
Transforming Clay into Ceramic
The First Firing
After drying, each coffee maker is bisque-fired at around 1,800°F (982°C).
This first firing hardens the clay, giving it strength while keeping it porous enough to accept glaze.
It’s the moment when raw clay becomes ceramic — a foundational transformation that prepares it for its final expression.
Adding Colour and Character
Hand-Glazing
This is where the artistry truly shines.
Each piece is glazed by hand — dipped, brushed, or layered in tones inspired by natural minerals and traditional ceramic palettes.
No two are ever the same. Subtle variations in glaze thickness and firing conditions create unique textures and depth, making every Filtrare coffee maker one-of-a-kind.
The Kiln’s Final Touch
The Final Firing
Once glazed, the pieces return to the kiln for their final firing, reaching temperatures above 2,200°F (1,200°C).
Here, heat and time work their quiet magic. The glaze fuses to the ceramic body, sealing it with a smooth, glass-like finish that’s durable, non-porous, and radiant.
When the kiln cools, the result is a piece that’s both strong and refined — a vessel made to last for your mornings.
Perfection in Every Piece
The Finishing Touches
Each coffee maker is then carefully inspected.
We test every spout for balance and flow, ensure each lid fits just right, and examine the glaze under natural light to confirm a flawless finish.
Only the pieces that meet our exacting standards earn the Filtrare mark.
